3rd Annual Family Promise of Central Connecticut Walk Away Homelessness Event happening Saturday, September 29
New Britain, August 16 —Lace up your sneakers and get ready to step out to help end family homelessness by participating in Family Promise of Central Connecticut’s 3rd Annual Walk Away Homelessness event taking place on Saturday, September 29.
This family friendly event sponsored by Thrivent Financial will take place at Walnut Hill Park which is located at 18 West Main Street in New Britain. All fundraising proceeds will benefit Family Promise of Central Connecticut, the New Britain-based nonprofit organization that supports homeless families with children regain adequate housing and self-sufficiency.
“There are over 200 Family Promise affiliates across the country,” explains Director, Heather Labbe, “Family Promise of Central Connecticut is the first affiliate to be established in Connecticut. Our work has been an incredibly rewarding experience –not only for the families we serve, but for the hundreds of volunteers who make it all possible.”
Those hundreds of volunteers represent 12 congregations throughout central Connecticut which provide overnight accommodations to guest families in the program on a rotational basis, one week at a time, four times a year. Volunteers also provide hot, homemade meals and continental style breakfasts.
During the day, families participating in the Family Promise of Central Connecticut program are transported by an affiliate-owned passenger van to the organization’s New Britain Day Center, where a full-time director and social worker provide individualized case management for adults while children attend school or day care.
“What’s wonderful about the program,” explains Director, Heather Labbe, “is that families experiencing a homelessness crisis are kept intact. That isn’t always the case in homeless shelters, and it’s a crucial component to helping them get back on their feet as quickly as possible.”
The Walk Away Homelessness event will begin with a warm up/Yoga Session at 9 a.m.; the Walk—a-Thon begins at 10 a.m., and will be followed by a magic show!
Walkers can register for free online by visiting the Family Promise Walk Away Homelessness registration link www://fpcct.gojiggy.com. Same-day walk registration will also be available in Walnut Hill Park beginning at 9 a.m. behind the Band Shell. All participating walkers that collect donations will receive an official event t-shirt.
